10.00-10.20:  Interpreting a full blood count:Dr Hayder Hussein (Haematology ST7, West Midlands)

10.20-10.50:  Lecture on haemolytic anaemias with particular reference to sickle cell disease and sickle cell trait: Dr Hayder Hussein

10.50-11.20:  Lecture on malignant haematology focussing on myeloma: Dr Peter Dyer (Consultant Haematologist, Royal Stoke University Hospitals)

11.20-11.35:  Coffee / tea

11.35-13.05:  Small group teaching on anaemia diagnosis and management


Small group teaching on haematological malignancy concentrating on the recognition and necessary F1 management of the common disorders

13.05 - 13.45:  Lunch

13.45-14.15:  Lecture on transfusion focussing on choosing the right blood component for the right indication: Dr Suzy Morton (Consultant Haematologist, University Hospitals Birmingham and National Health Blood and Transplant)

14.15-14.45:  Lecture on the prevention, diagnosis and management of venous thrombo-embolism and management of common acquired bleeding disorders: Dr Charles Percy (Consultant Haematologist, University Hospitals Birmingham)

14.45-15.00:  Coffee / tea

15.00-16.30:  Small group teaching on essential practical blood transfusion for F1 doctors including the management of massive blood loss


Small group teaching on what every F1 doctor must know about coagulation

16.30-17:00:  Ask Me Anything: open forum on any aspect of haematology
