Haem-onc inpatients are at risk of critical illness and should be identified early using NEWS. ICU referral should involve direct discussion between consultant haematologist and consultant intensivist. Prognosis of critical illness largely determined by severity of critical illness rather than haematological malignancy. ICU outcomes for haem onc patients improved in recent years. A ‘trial of ICU’ may be appropriate in some cases. Communication is key.
