This was the first UK guideline to focus on the management of iron deficiency in pregnancy. Iron deficiency is the commonest cause of anaemia in pregnancy beyond any potential dilutional causes. Indeed iron deficiency is the commonest cause of anaemia worldwide. The guideline clearly sets out how best to diagnose and manage this group of people. Good use of cut-off values are given for management within the laboratory and discussion about the clinical utility of various tests are given. A helpful table of iron preparations is also provided
