The guideline focuses on the various laboratory tests, the advantages and disadvantages for diagnosing iron status particularly in patients with iron restriction seen in chronic kidney disease.

The guideline came out as a forerunner to the NICE 2015 June update on Anaemia managment in patients with CKD. In this guideline reference and guidance was given particularly around %HRC and the reticulocyte analytes. Clinicians and laboratories managing patients with CKD can use the FID guideline to help develop and implement new guidance for FID testing with the audit tool on the BSH website.
