Chinese doctors have reported that immune thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) may be a rare side effect of COVID-19 vaccines based upon the inactivated virus – linking the side-effect to this form of COVID-19 vaccine for the first time.
Doctors report two cases of young patients who developed the condition within five days of receiving the inactivated viral vaccine CoronaVac.
The first patient was a woman of 23 who developed symptoms three days after her second dose of CoronaVac. The second was a woman of 45 who became ill five days after her second vaccination. Both patients were treated successfully using plasma exchange and immunosuppression.
Writing in the journal Frontiers of Medicine, the doctors report a subsequent analysis of TTP incidence in the Nanjing area of China. This showed an increasing incidence between 2019 and 2022 after the introduction of COVID-19 vaccination.
TTP has been previously identified as a side-effect of mRNA- and adenovirus-based COVID-19 vaccines. However, the researchers say it is the first report of TTP linked to vaccination with inactivated COVID-19 virus.
They write: “It contributes to the growing body of knowledge on the potential adverse effects of COVID-19 vaccines.
“It also provides valuable insights into the diagnosis and treatment of TTP, highlighting the need for vigilance and appropriate clinical management in the context of COVID-19 vaccination programmes.”
