Children with paediatric venous thromboembolism (VTE) should receive direct oral anticoagulants in preference to standard therapies, according to updated international guidelines.
The guidelines were first published in 2018 and have now been updated by the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) and the American Society of Hematology (ASH).
16 recommendations have been updated and four new ones added, including the new guidance on direct oral anticoagulants, the developers say.
The new guidelines have been published in Blood Advances.
Dr Pantep Angchaisuksiri, president of the ISTH, said: “Collaborating with ASH on these updated paediatric VTE guidelines reflects the ISTH’s commitment to ensuring that children affected by VTE receive the most effective, evidence-based care.
“It’s critical that we continue advancing research and education in this area to support better outcomes for young patients worldwide.”
The guidelines team was chaired by Professor Paul Monagle, a paediatric haematologist based at the University of Melbourne, Australia.
Professor Monagle said: “Thrombosis in children is an increasingly common complication in children with complex illnesses and conditions and, if not managed well, can impact long-term outcomes for these patients. The care of children is important, and parents should know that there is a body of evidence that supports their child’s treatment options.”
