Our workforce project highlighted a critical problem: much essential haematology work, notably liaison advice and transfusion input, is not recorded, so job plans and workforce models underestimate the true workload. This invisible work affects patient safety, service planning and recruitment.

The new volunteer‑led Advice & Guidance (A&G) recommendations directly respond to those findings. They offer practical steps to make liaison activity visible and manageable: routing GP queries via eRS A&G, adopting an Advice & Referral model, setting turnaround targets, recording A&G in patient records, and recognising A&G in job plans.

These measures are designed to capture the time haematologists already spend advising colleagues and to support fairer workforce planning.
