Haematology services are facing a crisis through workforce shortages. We are determined to get this changed for the better – for the sake of patients as well as healthcare professionals. You can read more on our Workforce page.

We are grateful for the sites that have submitted data but we are still missing data on a handful of sites; mostly London based.
Please could I ask any sites that I have yet to complete submission to do so ASAP as the information is being used to support ongoing discussions with GMC and NHSE.

Every year the Royal College of Physicians of London, Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow conducts a census with the aim of providing robust data on the state of the physician workforce in the UK. These census data help us plan for the future and is more important than ever, considering the effects of COVID-19 on the NHS. |
The data collected via the census is integral to enable further discussions and resourcing around the workforce issue.

Workforce
Shortages in the haematology workforce, which have been getting worse for years, are now having a huge impact on practitioners and on patient care.
We are therefore commissioning a major research project to investigate the current state of the haematology workforce, the wellbeing of the multidisciplinary team (MDT) and how good practice can help the workforce crisis.

The British Society for Haematology's review of the UK haematology clinical workforce undertaken in 2019 showed that clinical haematologists, nurses, laboratory scientists, pharmacists and specialist managers were under increasing pressure to deliver for patients in the NHS as the burden of doing more with fewer staff added to the rates of work-related stress, sickness and absence.

Recent campaigns that BSH have supported:
February 2023: BSH were a signatory on a statement from the RCP on the BMA ballot for industrial action
November 2022: As part of RCP’s Strength in Numbers campaign, BSH were a signatory on an open letter to the Chancellor, in support of publishing the NHS long-term workforce plan in full.
September 2022: Inequalities in Health Alliance: BSH were a signatory on an open letter to the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care urging the publication of the Health Disparities White Paper.
