On behalf of BSH, I am writing to express our endorsement of the Serious Hazards of Transfusion (SHOT) Transfusion Safety Standards. The BSH is committed to advancing haematology and upholding high standards of patient care, and we recognise the importance of these new standards in contributing to transfusion safety across the United Kingdom.
These standards offer a comprehensive practical framework, informed by insights from decades of haemovigilance. They will enhance governance and accountability, foster transparency, support learning across all levels of care and sincerely involve patients. Significantly, these standards directly address the findings and recommendations of the Infected Blood Inquiry and remediate systemic gaps highlighted by the Inquiry and reports submitted to SHOT.
We support the implementation of these standards into day-to-day transfusion practices, encompassing both clinical and laboratory settings. Their successful integration is important for patient safety and for promoting a culture of excellence in transfusion medicine.
SHOT has developed resources to support teams in the implementation of these standards and are continuing to do so. We encourage all healthcare professionals and organisations involved in transfusion to engage with these resources and integrate the standards into their practice.
BSH believes that by collectively adopting these standards, we can effectively strengthen transfusion safety, contribute to improved patient outcomes, and build further trust in our healthcare system.
Yours sincerely,
Dr Sue Pavord
BSH President
